Cholera epidemic which is affecting Haiti since the mid-October worsened, the last balance sheet showing the death of 648 persons and 9971 hospitalizations, announced the Public Health Ministry on Wednesday.
A formal review previously released Tuesday, indicated 583 people dead and more than 9,000 hospitalized.
Only on Tuesday, 46 deaths were recorded in the Artibonite department, located in the northern region, where the city of Gonaives and where the epidemic broke out, authorities have said in a statement.
“Others should be dying as we speak. Since November 5 until today, we have buried at least 70 people and that is only in the downtown area of Gonaives. There are more people who died in rural areas surrounding Gonaives.” said Saint-Justin in a telephone interview for Reuters.
In the West department, where the capital Port-au-Prince, 42 deaths were recorded in total, the ministry said, adding that the capital stock is a dead and 115 hospitalizations.
“We are calling on all those who can come to help. The hospitals are full. We are overwhelmed.” he also said to Reuters.
The poor hygienic conditions in the refugee camps, following the sixth of January 12, are generating fears of a rapid progression of the epidemic of cholera, a highly contagious disease.
